City Hotel – Dunfermline #review

City Hotel Dunfermline

It almost never happened! You can imagine how excited I was knowing that I was going to spend ‘An Evening With Peter Andre’ Only, it didn’t happen.  Cancelled by Kong Events

Unfortunately the event had been cancelled 48 hours previous,  gutted is an understatement.

Never mind though all money paid will be refunded. (Still keeping an eye on the bank account though)

As the hotel had been booked with no cancellation we decided to keep the booking and have a night away.

So glad we did, that is myself and my husband, extremely pleasant and professional hotel staff.

On arrival I thought to myself  ‘It looked rather dated’  However, I was quite surprised once inside, Yes, it’s an old building and Yes, there are many original features but they have upgraded area’s that give the hotel a very ambient feeling.

We had a few drinks at the bar after unpacking and before going out to dinner, in what I can only describe as a very chilled and relaxed atmosphere, the bar staff as per were all professional and one in particular (Whom we forgot his name) Ooops! Was very knowledgeable of the area.

Next morning we went down to breakfast and had the Full English very ample and was extremely glad they cooked my poached egg as requested.

We decided to try the local Italian Carlucci Italian Restaurant for dinner and glad we did, on the menu was exactly what my Hubby and I were looking for, I cannot fault the food at all.  Top Notch!  Beautiful setting and professional staff.

The hotel is situated in a little town with plenty of shops, places to eat and drink, as well as local history.

I would definitely recommend. City Hotel Dunfermline

The Beauty of Dundee

The Beauty Of Dundee – Hotel Review

Set in a former textile mill (Jute-Spinning) with natural brick walls, stunning lighting and bespoke furniture it was hard to find something I disliked.

On entry I was quite taken back to find beautiful antique furniture and vintage pieces that you would expect to find in an antique shop, however, this was no antique shop!

As I approached the hotel which, at first glance had me thinking I was stepping into the set of a Harry Potter Movie; I was actually quite shocked to find such eye-catching accessories inside.

Alice, the reception manager was a very friendly and well spoken Lady who had a wealth of knowledge about the hotel’s history, one of the things that I found quite pleasing to hear was the fact that the hotel staff were at the forefront from the start, including their input into the interior design.

The Hotel is run by IHG Group I would recommend you download their App for a host of benefits to suit all your needs.

The bedrooms are of the most exquisite taste and upon entry gave me a feel of being back at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. ‘It can’t be that good, I hear you say’

Well, actually it is, the interior design is very similar to the MGM and the layout as a whole, extremely well laid out and exceptionally clean.

The views from the 5th floor are outstanding with a bird’s-eye view of the River Tay, the Railway Bridge and so much more, not forgetting the Bell Tower.

The Queen size bed with cotton sheets was luxurious and the white tiled bathroom with stunning bath and large walk in shower was such a treat, and last but not least the super fast WiFi.

Restaurant – Food

The Daisy Tasker restaurant is on the ground floor very well-lit and laid out, with a stunning Bar most definitely fit for the high-end of the market.

Charlotte, the young Lady who waited on me from the moment I stepped inside was very polite and accommodating.

My evening meal was as follows; Poached Chicken Caesar – Anchovies, Parmesan & Salt Baked Potatoes. (Highly Recommended ) I savoured every mouthful, in fact if I wasn’t so full I would have ordered it again. This was of course washed down with a couple of glasses of Amaretto.

Breakfast for me wasn’t as good as I would have expected, I have had much better so that was a little of a let down, however, it was edible.

So would I stay there again? Absolutely

Would I recommend to others? 100%

There is so much to see and do in the centre of Dundee, which is where the hotel is situated so that was a huge plus right away, I didn’t have enough time to stay long enough to visit the Museum etc, so if you go give yourself time to check it all out you won’t be disappointed.

How They Lived

‘How They Lived’ Chirk Castle, North Wales.

There’s a certain kind of opulence when you visit old castles around the world, my visit to Chirk Castle, in North Wales. (Second Visit)

There are several thoughts that came to my mind as I walked around the gardens and then stepped inside to allow it to take me back in time.

Luxuriousness, Sumptuousness, Lavishness, Richness, Splendour, Grandeur what would you call it?

There is an abundance of beauty in and around the old place which had me imagine being there back in the day, The main room (The Saloon) was probably the biggest room there with a mix of richly coloured paint surrounding the walls each with its own theme the ceiling being the main focal point.

I’m not a fan of murals or faces coming out of walls or ceilings but I guess back then it was all the rage and I suppose like the photo colleges we have on our own walls, although I highly doubt anyone would want them looking down on us from the ceiling?

I could just imagine the grand balls they had in this room everyone sat around the edge of the room with their crystal glasses almost filled with only the best wines and campaign.

The ladies in their long evening dresses dancing with the most handsome and finely dressed men.

I would have loved to have been there during this period in time, I then moved on to the carefully preserved traditional bedroom, with its four-poster bed, old fireplace and even a table were one could sit and read.

It was an old-fashioned room tastefully done with Nineteenth century indulgence of what would have been only the best for the rich folks that dwelled there.

The room was obviously decorated to create comfort by simple means, I would have been so warm and cosy in a room like that sat by the fireplace with a book in one hand and a glass of something nice in the other.

The floorboards in some of the rooms looked cold and uninviting to me but again back then it would have been the thing so to speak, it would though have had very large extravagant rugs that would have sat in the middle of the floor creating a warm environment to retire.

If you compare then and now then history is certainly repeating itself, we may not have the floorboards but we have the parky flooring and we do have the rugs bang in the middle of the floor.

Much of the nineteenth century has gone only to return in retro fashion, I do like that but not so sure that I would purchase some of it, I wonder how many people would live in such grandeur now though? or would they turn their nose up at the old look?

The designers and decorators during this period absolutely had an eye for detail as you look closely at the decor and the way in which the colours just seem so go together in a steady flow of what some would call dark and cold somehow manage to compliment each other. Every wall, every ceiling and all the accessories certainly have a story to tell.

Sli-Dala #Roscrea #CoTipperary #Ireland

Sli-Dala B&B Roscrea, Co Tipperary. Ireland

The best B&B I have stayed in and I’ve stayed in many around the UK & Ireland There is absolutely nothing I can fault here.

Marie the owner was such a delight and a breath of fresh air, there was nothing too much bother and the breakfast was spot on.

Extremely clean rooms, in fact the one thing that caught my attention when I arrived there was no mop in her hand to wash the floors, she was on bended knee’s the old-fashioned way of doing it.

With beautiful wooden furniture to greet you on entry and everything white and clean you could actually smell the cleanliness.

The surrounding grounds with beautiful tree’s and flowers right down to the open seating area was just so welcoming.

If you go to Roscrea its a must that you book into the Sli-Dala you most certainly wont be disappointed and I’m so looking forward to returning next year.

There is an abundance of history and wonderful places in Co Tipperary like St Joseph Cathedral and beyond including the Shannonbridge and then onto Galway another of Ireland’ Beautiful places to be.

Marie has everything printed out for her guests to, places to go and directions and she has a wealth of knowledge which is a pleasure to listen to.

I love Ireland, I love the Irish but that’s no surprise as my roots are Ireland and I love to visit even if it is only once a year.

#VictoriaApparments #London

Victoria Apartments 89 Wilton Road, Victoria London, SW1V 1DN

Most people I know myself included enjoy getting away and having time to just relax and take it all in right? Well I took it all in all right!

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Amar Adatia, Film Director & Producer of films such as, ‘Gangsters, Gamblers & Geezers’ and ‘Dangerous Game’ To the Premiere of his latest film ‘Retribution’

Who wouldn’t be excited? I was extremely excited to be asked and just couldn’t wait for the screening tonight 5th Sept 2017 Also the release date in the shops too.

I traveled down to London on Virgin Trains, absolutely the best train company as far as I’m concerned and if your fortunate enough to travel first class as I was even better.

I then arrived at Kings Cross and headed for the tube to Victoria five stops away so it was relatively quick, and thankfully the apartments weren’t that far away from the tube.

The night before I left I had an email with instructions on how to get there including how to access my room should I be arriving after 6pm.

The instruction quoted as this: Use the code to enter the offices **** once inside you will see fifteen mail boxes, mine was number * Use code **** To remove the key then use the following code to enter the stairwell **** then go up two flights of stairs and your room number *

So after reading and printing the email I thought to myself, ‘This is all a bit strange’

I then decided to check them out via other websites e.g Tripadvisor & I booked via eBookers. I was gob-smacked to say the least.

Not one recommended comment had I read, still I thought I will still book in here as I had already paid for it and surely it can’t be that bad, Can it?

So I arrived outside what I would call a shop front window or a run down real estate office, bad I know, but that is exactly what it looked like and I’m not going to tell you otherwise.

I entered the office and there was a lady and a gentleman sat behind the desk, I gave them my name and they proceeded to tell me to use the code for the stairwell and go up to the second floor where my room was.

Cracks on the walls on the way up the narrow staircase with dirty carpets I was now feeling a little apprehensive, however once I entered the room It didn’t seem that bad.

Granted it most definitely wasn’t as they showed online but hey ho! it was somewhere to sleep, it was reasonably clean but could have been better.

I sat on the bed to send a message home to say I had arrived and was safe, and all of a sudden a RAT, yes, you read right a baby RAT had scurried in front of my feet and went under the wardrobe.

At this point I was shaken and decided there and then I was NOT going to stay at this property, then I heard it make a noise which reduced me to tears.

I picked up my case and locked the door and returned to the office, I told them I refused to stay there, they asked me why?  and I told them through tears, for which I felt quite ashamed, the lady said to me I’m so sorry I will give you another room I told her no it was not happening and left.

I then went to three larger hotels nearby to see if I could book a room unfortunately there were either no single rooms or they were way to much just for the two nights I needed.

There were other small establishments nearby but if the Victoria was RAT Infested then the others MAY have been too I thought?

So sadly I had to return to Kings Cross and get the next train back to Scotland.

I spoke to Amar and made my apologies, I was glad he understood and take my hat off to him after all he did invite me to the Premiere. An absolute gentleman much respect to him.

I have in the past stayed at some dodgy places but none as bad as this, this is another reason why I have taken up #BELINDATRAVELSTHEGLOBE Not only to talk about the beauty that surrounds us, but to talk about good hotel accommodation & food and to give them the respect they are due for providing a good service.

But here this, too many individuals are taking to submitting their own reviews on their otherwise run down hotel’s bad food/service etc but no more.

When I and many others travel either by boat, car, bus or plane we expect a level of service for the money that we pay.

If we eat at your establishment we expect food hygiene to be more that just edible we expect food hygiene to be 100% no tummy bugs no unwashed lettuce but to name a few.

If we pay good money cheap or not and yes, I know you get what you pay for but what we don’t expect is to be handed the keys to a room that has creaky beds, cobwebs in the corners or on the light fittings, we don’t expect to be washing in a toilet that is not pristine, and we definitely don’t expect to be sleeping in a RAT INFESTED HOLE.

If your running a bad establishment and it’s filthy then I’m going to EXPOSE you warts and all, If you are going to take my or anyone else’s money then CLEAN UP YOUR ACT.

I will be checking into many hotels in the course of the next couple of years, And I will be eating your food and I wont always be using my pseudonym, I will be blogging about where I’m going but I won’t be blogging which hotel/restaurant I will be staying/eating until I’m there.

Thirty or so years ago I was a Market Trader I staying in London regular (Notting Hill) Now that was back in the 1980’s back then I rented a bed sit and if I got up to use the toilet I would find hundreds of cockroaches scurrying around which is just filth, this is the 21st Century and still this goes on what on earth is happening?

I know that there are many run down and out pure filthy places all over the country/world. What are the Government doing to help those who live in such conditions? But more to the point what are business’s doing to eradicate such filth?

I’m not by any means saying that people just don’t care because there are people who try their best not to have this in their homes/business’s but what excuse have businesses got? Health and Food Hygiene should be top priority no matter if you are in the hotel industry or the food industry so those who have that laid back careless attitude best get it together or their business is going to go down the pan along with the filth.

Note; This blog/review is in no way bad mouthing or discrediting all business’s involved in the travel, hotel or food industry, it is however exposing those who know and are aware that their business is affected by such issue’s.

I will bring to light those establishments because I cannot review such as a great place to stay/eat while people pay good money only to find that those good reviews they read are indeed the complete opposite.

The White House, Roscrea, Co Tipperary. Ireland

There was nothing bad about the landlord nor the food at the White House in fact the landlord was very welcoming and couldn’t do enough for his guest’s, the food was amazing top marks to the chef.

If you ever go there for a meal definitely ask for the home-made shepherds pie with chips and veg on the side.

The only complaint I had the accommodation, I don’t know who was adding the reviews to Tripadvisor but they were way off the radar, one comment I read stated that the White House seemed to have undergone some renovations.

Eh, I thought, not so. there was no door on the wardrobe in my room and the shelf inside had been broken and did not look like they had tried to fix it, then there was the bunker in which the tea & coffee etc sat, the front of the bunker was literally hanging on the floor.

The wooden bed was most uncomfortable it creaked at every opportunity every time I moved in bed it woke me up, the walls are so thin the guy next doors snoring sounded like he was lying right next to me.

The bathroom was tiny as was the shower which meant I couldn’t turn around without banging my elbows, it wasn’t the cleanest bathroom either but I have been in worse.

I was taken across the street to the rooms, and when I saw the front door which was boarded up with a wooden panel on the one side. I was kind of worried that either it was a very rowdy area or they had a bit of bother there maybe even a break in?

Overall I would give the White House a 3 out of 10 simply on the accommodation as for the welcome and the food I couldn’t have asked for better.

The walk around that little old town was really lovely with plenty of to see, but for a Friday night it was unusually quiet probably around six people out and about doing a charity cycle.

So, would I go back to Roscrea? Yes, absolutely but I will return to Sli-Dala Bed & Breakfast when I do.

See my review on Sli-Dala next.

Coming This Weekend

Coming this weekend

My reviews on travel, hotel’s & food. What I done in Roscrea, Co Tipperary and will I go back? Well, I absolutely will but there is not such good news I’m afraid on my accommodation from one hotel in particular.

I’ve never been a fan of upsetting the apple cart so to speak, however if your going to do what I do and travel you need to speak the truth.

Too many establishments have been given good reviews For whatever reason? when in fact it’s the complete opposite.

So many people go onto website reviews before booking a hotel for instance only to arrive there and be pretty mad and, quite rightly so, by what they see, eat and much more.

I’m off again to London next week so to read my reviews on Co Tipperary, London and much more follow me here or  Belinda on Twitter and or Facebook Just click the links.
