Chinese airlines are gearing up for the upcoming Golden Week holiday by increasing flights and expanding their destinations.
Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) is expected to handle approximately 1.33 million passenger trips during this period, with an average of 166,200 per day. A total of 8,859 flights will be handled, averaging 1,107 flights per day. BCIA will offer 73 international destinations, covering 47 countries and regions across five continents. It will have more than 130 international flights per day, including over 35 intercontinental routes, making it the leading domestic airport in terms of international connectivity.
China Southern Airlines plans to arrange an additional 3,000 flights from Wednesday to October 8 to meet the rising demand. The airline will operate 2,200 flights per day on domestic routes and will also add extra flights to Southeast Asia.
Data from VariFlight, an industry information provider, indicates that the number of civil aviation flights across China during Golden Week is expected to surpass the figures from 2019 and may reach a new record high. Domestic routes are projected to have over 100,000 passenger flights, while overseas routes are expected to exceed 11,000 passenger flights. The most popular domestic routes are Beijing-Shanghai, Shanghai-Shenzhen, and Shanghai-Guangzhou.
As for outbound travel, the top three destinations are Hong Kong, Seoul, and Osaka. According to the National Immigration Administration, an average of 1.58 million entry and exit trips are expected daily during the holidays. This represents a 300 percent increase compared to 2022 and reaches 90 percent of the 2019 level.
