As the 2022 Winter Olympics and winter sports season approaches, traveller enthusiasm for winter sports vacations is surging globally. Winter sports lovers who just don’t want to miss out on sports trips this winter, are on the lookout for travel inspiration and products on Trip.com Group’s platforms.
According to Trip.com Group data, “Winter Olympic Games” searches on Ctrip, a sub-brand of Trip.com Group, doubled in December 2021 compared to the previous month. As skiing season returns, “skiing” tagged user-generated content on Ctrip Community, a travel content platform on Ctrip, soared 224% in Q4 last year compared to the same period in 2020, and grew 67% compared to Q3 2021. Visitor traffic to “skiing” tagged content increased 39% compared to Q4 2020, and grew by nearly 39% compared to Q3 2021.
Skyscanner, also a sub-brand of Trip.com Group has found a similar increase recently - many skiing destinations around the world have seen a hike in interest, with searches for Geneva, Switzerland soaring by nearly 300% in October last year.
In mainland China, ski resort ticket bookings rose six fold between December 20, 2021 and January 1, 2022. Millennials have been the driving force behind ski resort ticket bookings, while in 2021 bookings from ski lovers born after 2000 saw the fastest increase compared to other age groups.
As winter sports vacations have seen a surge in interest, short-haul ski hotel trips have also been trending this winter. In December 2021, overall ski hotel bookings in mainland China increased by 73% compared to November 2021, with 45% of ski lovers opting to stay at short-haul hotels.
